Centrifugation Or Churning

Concept Explanation

Centrifugation Or Churning

Two components having different densities can be separated by centrifugation . It is a process used when the sedimentation of suspended particles in a liquid takes place very slowly. It is based on the fact that denser particles are settled at the bottom and lighter particles remain at the top when rotated rapidly. Device used to separate the components is called "Centrifuge". Centrifugal machines are used which can be rotated by hand or by electricity.

  • The mixture is taken in specially designed test tubes known as the centrifuge tubes.
  • They are placed in separate holders. The holders are then rotated rapidly with the help of a handle or electricity. After some time the rotation is stopped, and the centrifuge tubes are taken out.
  • Observation: It is seen that the solid particles have settled down at the bottom of the tubes. The liquid above the solid is collected by decantation. The method of centrifugation or churning is used to separate cream from milk. Since cream is lighter than milk, it comes on the surface and is skimmed off.
  • Application of Centrifugation:

  • Diagonostic Laboratories for urine and blood test.
  • Washing machines to remove water from the clothes.
  • Dairies and homes to remove butter from cream.
